Crab in da Bag review! (4th April 2014)

Crab in da Bag at Big Splash

AHOY! Welcome Aboard!

First time trying out this Southern Louisiana style seafood restaurant which opened its doors in early September at the famous Big Splash. A treat from my promoted colleagues, congrats once again 🙂

Do make advance reservation as it is usually crowded on weekends.

Love the nautical setting – fish net, steering wheel, safety float, blue. Very related to the industry that I am in!

Yes it got very messy but everyone was messy together, no one cared about maintaining image which was so shiok!! Get all ten fingers and palms dirty with crustacean goodness!!!!

The colourful menu

we ordered our food at 7.30 pm and they said waiting time is one hour. We agreed to it and requested for drinks to be served first. However, the drinks came only 45 minutes later after we reminded them 4 times.

Tower of lager, CiDB Wings. Fried Cauliflower

Tower of lager, CiDB Wings ($10), Fried Cauliflower ($8)

I only took a sip of the Lager which was smooth, I ordered Somersby pear cider for myself 🙂
Wings were ordinary, we were too famished from waiting an hour. omg I just realized CiDB Wings stand for Crab in Da Bag -___-
Fried cauliflower was interesting, liked the batter albeit the slight chao tar taste.

Venus Clam in Ultimate Curry

Venus Clam in Ultimate Curry ($20)

Clams were juicy and sweet, went very well with the sauce. Individual orders of seafood will come in a bag, the staff will tie a knot then flip it over and cut the ‘top’ part of the plastic: tadah, a make shift plate.

Baby Squids $10, South African Lobsters (3 for $195), deshelved lobster meat, Black Pomfret ($18)

Baby Squids $10, South African Lobsters (3 for $195), deshelved lobster meat, Black Pomfret ($18)

Baby squids were well fried to a crisp. Lobster was boiled but sauces were given for dripping in. Black pomfret was quite tiny for the price but I love the spicy sauce.

The Titanic Caboodle Pot!!!

The Titanic & Gigantic Caboodle Pot!!! ($299 & $399)

“Caboodle” is an American slang for “everything”. I think for big eaters, the caboodle pot is not enough. And to have enough, you will burn a big hole in your pockets.

Another look at the caboodle pot!

The sides like rice and bread only came after we finished our main course, minus points for bad coordination of orders even though we ordered all together right from the start.

Total bill came up to SGD 1546 for 11 pax, which was about SGD 140.50 per pax!!! Very expensive lo, thank you promoted colleagues for the treat. Maybe we should have went Malaysia to feast 4 – 5 times with the money.

Overall I think the seafood-in-a-bag + eat-with-your-bare-hands concept is very intriguing, love it that everyone’s hands are so dirty that they won’t be using their mobile phones, the only entertainment will be enjoying the food + engaging in real conversation with your friends!!

However. this restaurant really needs to buck up on their service and allocate enough manpower to handle the crowd. Come on, for the amount of money they charge and earned, how painful is it to hire 2 – 4 more staff to offer better experience for the clients.

Bali March 2014 (Day 2) {Surfing! & Naughty Nuri!!}

Breakfast provided by the villa!

Breakfast provided by the villa!

Today is surfing day! YK’s friend said that the waves are the best at about 9 am for that day, which means we have to leave the villa by 8 am. So we requested for 7.30 am breakfast to be sent to us, but the earliest breakfast timing is 8 am. And guess what. The door bell rang at 7.30 am and they came to set up the table for us.

The breakfast menu. Same everyday

So I tried all the variants of the eggs, I think scramble eggs were the nicest.  Danish pastry was not bad as well, a bit toasty warm, not like those leftovers pastries. Oh the sausages sucked, really bad – weird texture and weird taste (grossed out).

Cabbed to Kuta Beach ~40,000 rupiah

So you crawl through the rows of make-shift stalls along the beach with lots of surfer instructors promoting their service to you. Some go as low as USD 10 to teach the basic. As YK came to learn before, she recommended her instructor to us. We paid 300,000 rupiah (~SGD 34) each for a 2 hours lesson with individual instructor.

There were quite a lot of rubbish in the sea that day and we nearly hit into wood logs / plastic bags / food container etc etc etc. One of the instructors said that the beach / water will be cleaner in June / July when it is the surfing season. March is off-peak so we get all the rubbish!!! We surfed from 10 am – 11 am then rested for 2 hours, just chillax / watch rayna tie the the predator hairstyle for 200,000 rupiah (totally kanna conned). Resumed surfing from 1 pm to 2 pm. The waves in the afternoon was much stronger / faster than morning. I managed to stand up on the surfboard a few times in the morning but afternoon waves made it too difficult. And my board rammed into another newbie’s face (SO SORRY!!). He was learning too, so he didn’t know how to avoid me when my board headed towards him!! So poor thing lor.

Overall I think surfing is quite a fun activity. But I truly hated the salty / bitter seawater getting into my eyes (making them swollen for a few hours) and into my mouth (yes I think I drank 500 ml of those). And it is very physically demanding, you have to paddle out into the sea to catch the waves while the waves are actually pushing you back to the shore. And sometimes you might not even catch the waves due to wrong timing!! Thank goodness for the instructor who spoon fed me, pushing me while I was lying on my board into the sea (my arms are too short to paddle, ok just my excuse la). I think I only used 20% of the energy required of me. OPSIES.

Famished and tired us went to search for Bamboo Corner as recommended by a senior couple (tourists) at the beach. It was a 15 – 20 minutes walk from Kuta Beach. Frankly speaking the eatery looked like a ruined / abandoned shop with unlit interior. We wanted to look for alternative but were too hungry! So we sat outside, along the road with natural sunlight.

Well well, I would say the food generally didn’t disappoint at their price point. Steak / fried fish / prawns / calamari were all 35,000 – 40,000 rupiah each. Yes, SGD 4.5 for that big piece of fish!! Fish was fresh and yummy. Please do not order the steak unless you are ok with well done / tough meat. I think they don’t do beef very well in general.

Definitely worth a try if you are in that area and looking for a cheap and fast fix! But not worth to travel down just for the food.

Then we went for a massage nearby which is not worth mentioning.

On a happier note, dinner was perfect!

We reached about 9 pm and waited only 5 minutes to get a table for 4. Restaurant was pretty crowded for a thursday night.

Additional order of the tuna steak, medium rare, but it came too cooked for our liking. Major disappointed!! I would imagine sweet potato lovers to enjoy the sweet potato fries, which were freshly fried. Salad was too soggy. Brownies tasted like pre-mixed batter (which rayna likes).

Feasting!

The ribs were really yummy!! We came back here again on the 4th night. hee hee

The sides were just average tasting, order if you want variety but don’t take them too seriously.
